On Friday, October 4 at approximately 7:30 a.m., an Averill Park Central School District bus was involved in an accident on Gettle Road. Bus 57 was rear-ended by a passenger car also coming to school at the intersection of Route 43 and Gettle Road. The car had three students in it, none of whom were injured. The bus was transporting students to the Middle and High Schools. Five students (3 MS, 2 HS) and the driver of the bus were transported to Samaritan and Albany Memorial Hospitals as a precautionary measure. No students or drivers were seriously injured. All parents of students on board the bus have been contacted at this point.
APHS Principal Colleen Gomes went to Albany Memorial with school counselor, Joe Plantz. Another school counselor, Jen O'Neill went to Samaritan to make sure an adult was with the students until parents arrived.
Superintendent Jim Hoffman noted, “Kudos to our transportation department, school nurse Jo Flanagan and administration on the way this incident was handled. The Fire Chief specifically asked me to thank them all, as they were incredibly helpful and professional throughout.”
