The testing facility with The IMA Group will be moved from the current home at Hudson Valley Community College to the parking area at Van Rensselaer Manor Rehabilitation & Nursing call 800-245-4245 to make an appointment. Residents seeking to be tested are asked to bring a driver’s license and an insurance card. Health care workers and first responders are asked to bring a service identification card to appointment.

BUILDING LEVEL REOPENING PRESENTATIONS

The Averill Park Central School District solicited questions from community members about its 2020-2021 reopening plan, which was submitted to the State Education Department on July 31. This week, principals from the high school, middle school and elementary schools recorded presentations addressing many of the questions and comments that were submitted. These presentations are building and grade level specific.

PARENT CHOICE FORM RESULTS

The Averill Park Central School District would like to thank everyone who took the time to complete the parent choice form. During the week of Aug. 10-14, the District held five community forums, which more than 2,000 community members participated in to gain more knowledge about our reopening plans prior to making their decision. We recognize the care and thought that was put into making this decision about your child’s education for 2020-2021 school year.

This data is very important as it is being used for a number of time-sensitive decisions, including the development of bus runs, class lists and course selections. In total, 17% of our student body has opted for virtual-only learning to start off the school year. Now that we know the make-up of our student body, we can begin to implement our reopening plan and gear up for the first day of school on September 9.

2020-21 REVISED DISTRICT CALENDAR

On Tuesday, July 28th, the Averill Park Central School District Board of Education approved the revised 2020-21 calendar. The revised calendar moves the Superintendent’s Conference Day that was originally scheduled on November 3rd to September 8th, which will increase our conference days before school starts from two to three.

The District will be able to use these three days to better prepare to educate students, regardless of the instructional model chosen. Please note that this change will make September 9th the first day of student attendance, as opposed to September 8th.

AVERILL PARK REOPENING TASK FORCE AND SUB-COMMITTEES

In preparation for reopening, we have created a Reopening Task Force and five Reopening Sub-Committees made up of stakeholders of the District with specific purposes.Those committees include:

Teaching and Learning
Social-Emotional Needs
Finance and Operations
Staff and Student Health
Staff Culture and Well Being

The task force and sub-committees are already working hard on plans in anticipation of NYSED’s further guidance. After completing their work, the sub-committees will bring their plans back to the task force who will then use that information to create the comprehensive district-wide reopening plans to submit to NYSED by July 31.

We thank all the staff and community members who have volunteered their time and skills for our sub-committees.

PARENT SURVEY

To prepare for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year, the District created a School Re-Entry Survey for parents which concluded on July 12. As the District develops plans for reopening schools, community feedback is essential.

In total, 1,712 responses were logged. We have compiled the results of this survey, which can be found here.

ATHLETICS

Governor Cuomo announced that students participating in lower-risk, school-sponsored athletics throughout New York State can begin practicing and playing games on September 21. These lower-risk sports include tennis, soccer, cross-country, golf and swimming for the fall season. Higher-risk athletics, including football and volleyball in the fall, may also begin practicing on September 21, but may not play games until a later date. In addition, schools must limit capacity at indoor sporting events to 50 percent occupancy and spectators to no more than two per player.

NYSPHSAA released guidance, which can be found here.

In early-September, NYSPHSAA decided to postpone Football and Volleyball until March 1. Spring sports will begin on April 19.

STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT GUIDANCE

On July 16, the State Education Department provided guidance regarding the reopening of school buildings in the fall. This voluminous document is 145 pages and will help guide districts in developing final plans for reopening, which must be submitted to the state by July 31. During the first week of August, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo will decide in what capacity schools may reopen in the fall.
