On Monday, February 1, the Averill Park Central School District held a Special Board of Education Meeting to discuss high-risk winter sports. During this meeting, by a vote of 5-2, the Board approved JV and varsity girls and boys basketball, competitive cheer, and JV and varsity wrestling. Ice Hockey will not be offered at this time as this sport is merger-based and other school districts involved do not have clearance to participate.
Modified girls and boys basketball were approved to hold skill-development sessions and intra-squad scrimmages. Modified wrestling can hold non-contact training.
“While the state approved the play of winter sports, and Rensselaer County announced that it would permit them as well, each local school district is ultimately in charge of providing for the health and safety of our students and staff,” APCSD Superintendent Dr. James Franchini said. “We are confident that our Athletic Department and health professionals can provide a safe environment while simultaneously giving our student-athletes a chance to compete.”
At this time, Rensselaer County is the only County in the Suburban Council that has approved high-risk winter sports to begin. The District is currently working on ways to allow students to compete against other teams in the area. More information will be provided when available.
