The Averill Park Central School District would like to congratulate its 22 varsity teams that have qualified the District to be recognized as a 2023-24 “School of Distinction” by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA)!
Schools can apply for School of Distinction status if 100% of their varsity teams qualify for and receive the Scholar-Athlete team award during their respective sports seasons.
“Balancing academics and athletics is no easy feat, but our incredible student-athletes continue to find ways to excel in both categories” said Averill Park Central School District Superintendent Dr. Jim Franchini. “The work inside the classroom and through extracurricular activities by our dedicated and motivated student body are accomplishments I am certainly proud of.”
“The efforts made by student-athletes in the classroom are paramount to their success in the athletic arena, and beyond their high school days,” said Dr. Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA Executive Director. “We are proud of those who put in the work as ‘student’ and ‘athlete’, as well as the growth in both of School of Excellence and Distinction recognition.”
In past years, the Averill Park Central School District has earned the NYSPHSAA’s recognition of being a “School of Excellence”, which is earned when 75% of a school district’s varsity teams must qualify and receive the Scholar-Athlete team award.
The District will receive its commemorative award of Distinction at its local athletic director workshop this fall.
