Melissa Weatherwax is counting down the days to retirement, after 30 years of dedicated service to the Averill Park Central School District. Melissa started as a substitute teacher and spent her first 20 years in the classroom, but for the past decade, she’s supported her colleagues through professional development, instructional technology, and district initiatives.
“Working with Matt Hladun on transforming learning spaces in the middle and high schools has been a highlight. I’ve always been passionate about this work and leading professional development for this group has been an honor and a way to keep students at the heart of what I do. It’s been a privilege to guide and grow alongside my colleagues as they create dynamic, student-centered environments – whether by encouraging new approaches to time, space, and student engagement or exploring agile furniture and layouts. The experience is something I will always carry with me.”
While she briefly considered law as a teen, it was teaching that ultimately won her heart—and Averill Park was lucky to have her. Some of her most memorable moments include the Travel Expo at Poestenkill Elementary, where students immersed themselves in world cultures through music, food, and visual art; and playing a lead role in organizing APTransforms, a professional development day, complete with food trucks and keynote speakers; bringing her fellow educators together for growth.
“I have been lucky to work with an incredible Tech Department – each day, and through some very tough times, we have supported each other, problem-solved together, and, best of all, laughed through so much of it. I’ve been fortunate to work alongside incredible teammates and collaborate with colleagues across the district who’ve inspired me along the way.”
Though she’s stepping into retirement, Melissa isn’t done with education. She looks forward to new opportunities, time with family, and—at long last—traveling outside of the school calendar!
We thank Melissa for her service, leadership, and the inspiration she’s shared with so many.
