  7. 2025 Retirements: Lorna Otty

After more than two decades of dedicated service to the Averill Park Central School District, we are proud to congratulate Lorna Otty on her well-earned retirement!

Lorna began her journey with Averill Park in March 2002, inspired to apply as a substitute while her son attended George Washington School. Her very first assignment brought her to GW as a teacher’s aide—a role that sparked what would become a long and meaningful career across nearly every school in the district.

From learning the ropes in the high school copy room to serving as a secretary, receptionist, teacher’s aide, and even working in the cafeteria, Lorna wore many hats over the years. Though she never worked at Miller Hill, she made an impact in every other building, touching the lives of students, staff, and faculty alike. One of her favorite roles was working alongside Candi at Algonquin Middle School’s café—memories she recalls with fondness and laughter.

For Lorna, Averill Park was more than a workplace—it was a second home filled with friendship, fun, and unforgettable connections. She fondly remembers the camaraderie of her time at the high school, especially the special bond she shared with Michele, Caren, Trish, and Carol. Their dinners and annual Christmas ornament exchanges were highlights of the season and reflections of the deep personal ties built over the years.

Lorna’s talents extended far beyond her roles in the district—her love for baking became a beloved tradition. Each Christmas, she would bring in homemade treats for the high school staff, sharing her joy through every cookie and cake. Though the pandemic put a pause on that tradition, she brought it back one final time this past year as a heartfelt farewell and thank you.

When asked what she’ll miss most, Lorna simply said: the people. The connections she’s made over the years are ones she will treasure for life.

As she steps into retirement, Lorna looks forward to finishing her home renovations and finally putting her Culinary degree—earned over six years while working full-time—to good use. Her dream? Opening a gluten-free bakery from home… and if her son has his way, maybe even a food truck!

Lorna, thank you for your years of service, warmth, and dedication to the Averill Park community. You’ve made a lasting impact, and we wish you nothing but the best in this exciting new chapter.
