The Averill Park Central School District is excited to welcome Michael Stead as the new Principal of Miller Hill–Sand Lake Elementary School (MHSL). Mr. Stead will begin at MHSL on January 26, 2026 after the retirement of current Principal Denis Sibson.
Mr. Stead brings more than two decades of experience as an educator, instructional leader, and artist. His career has spanned roles as a classroom teacher, math specialist, enrichment teacher, instructional innovation coach, and most recently, Assistant Principal at Chatham Middle School. In that role, he has led initiatives to support at-risk students, expanded professional development for teachers, coordinated homeschool programs for more than 60 families, and secured grants to enhance student learning.
“There’s something truly special about the elementary years,” Stead said. “I’ve had the opportunity to work with students across a wide range of needs, including some of the most complex and challenging, and I’ve always found joy and meaning in helping them feel safe, understood and capable. Whether I am building systems with staff, coaching teachers, or greeting kids at the door, I lead with relationships. Trust, consistency, and compassion are the heart of how I work.”
In addition to his administrative work, Mr. Stead has a strong background in the arts. Certified to teach both elementary education and K–12 art, he has taught art in multiple districts and is also a talented cartoonist. His passion for creativity and innovation has inspired him to design arts-centered programs, STEAM initiatives, and summer learning experiences that connect students with local businesses, nonprofits, and community organizations. Mr. Stead is certified in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and is currently pursuing TESOL certification to further support English language learners.
“I believe Mr. Stead is a great fit to be Miller Hill-Sand Lake’s next principal. He impressed the interview committee, which was composed of Board of Education members, administrators, MHSL faculty, and MHSL parents,” APCSD Superintendent Dr. James Franchini said. “Mr. Sibson has left a lasting impact on our school community and has created an outstanding learning environment at MHSL. He will be working closely with Mr. Stead in order to ensure a smooth and effective transition for our students, families, faculty, and staff. We are incredibly grateful for Mr. Sibson’s leadership and I am confident that Mr. Stead will continue to make MHSL the wonderful school that it is.”
Known for leading with humility, humanity, and humor, Mr. Stead is excited to join the Averill Park CSD community. He looks forward to working with MHSL students, families, and staff to foster a learning environment that blends academic excellence, creativity, and care for the whole child.
