Each year, Averill Park Central School District appoints a Student Board Member to provide a student perspective during Board of Education meetings. This important role gives students a voice in the decision-making process while helping the Board better understand the student experience.
For the 2025-26 school year, senior Alexis Smith will serve as the Student Board Member. Alexis, who is also a co-president of the senior class, was encouraged to apply by APHS Principal Mr. Quiles.
In a brief interview, Alexis shared her thoughts on the position and the school experience:
-
On why she applied: “Mr. Quiles reached out to me. I’m one of the co-presidents of the senior class now so he thought I could fit this position very well.”
-
On what adults should understand about today’s students: “It’s very different. It’s different from when they went to high school. It’s changed a lot over the years and I think they just need to understand that.”
-
On what she enjoys most about school: “I like being with my friends a lot. It’s why I was excited coming back this school year, is being with my friends.”
Congratulations, Alexis! The District looks forward to your contributions as Student Board Member this year.
