  7. 4th Graders Explore New...

Averill Park Elementary Schools are getting a hands-on geography lesson like no other. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County’s 4-H Youth Development program brought the National Geographic Giant Traveling Map to 4th grade classrooms this year, made possible with support from the Averill Park Education Foundation Grant.

The 20-by-20-foot map of New York State lets students explore geography, science, and local features through interactive activities that promote curiosity, teamwork, and spatial thinking. 4-H educator Kandis Freer leads map-based lessons in schools, libraries, and community centers across the county, connecting students to the world around them while supporting New York’s 4th grade learning standards.

“This is a powerful way to spark curiosity and connect young people to the world around them,” Freer said. “The maps are not only visually stunning—they’re a gateway to deeper learning and exploration.”

The program is available to schools, libraries, and community partners across Rensselaer County. For more information, contact Kandis Freer at kmf83@cornell.edu or visit rensselaer.cce.cornell.edu.
