District elementary schools marked Fire Prevention Week with visits and demonstrations focused on this year’s theme: Lithium Battery Safety.

At WSL Elementary, the West Sand Lake Fire Department—joined by Sparky the Fire Dog and several firefighters who are former WSL students—discussed fire safety, lithium battery precautions, and safe evacuation techniques. Students saw just how fast firefighters can gear up for a call—only 1 minute, 25 seconds—and explored a firetruck up close.

Fifth-graders capped off the week with a trip to the WSL firehouse, where they watched firefighters use rescue tools on junk cars, demonstrating how they cut glass and used the “jaws of life” to quickly extract people from vehicles. The department’s goal: one hour from accident to hospital.

A big thank-you to Chief Frank Gazely and Assistant Chief Lee Crosier for leading these hands-on safety lessons and demonstrations throughout the week.
