The District recently conducted a comprehensive four-hour tabletop exercise focused on responding to a simulated school bus accident. The exercise brought together multiple public safety partners, including local law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency medical services, to strengthen coordination and communication during potential transportation emergencies.
The event was developed and facilitated by the Rensselaer County Office of Emergency Management, which prepared detailed materials and guided participants through a variety of complex scenarios. These included incidents occurring under different environmental and logistical conditions—such as limited cell service or internet connectivity, adverse weather, an event while out of district, and situations where a bus driver might be incapacitated.
Throughout the exercise, participants worked collaboratively to evaluate every phase of emergency response, from initial dispatch and scene management to communication with district officials and families. The discussion-based format allowed agencies to identify strengths, clarify roles, and address opportunities for improvement to ensure a rapid, coordinated, and effective response in the event of an actual emergency.
“This type of proactive planning is essential to keeping our students and staff safe,” said Dr. James Franchini, APCSD Superintendent. “We deeply appreciate the partnership and expertise of all the first responders and agencies who joined us for this important training.”
Averill Park CSD remains committed to the safety and preparedness of its students, staff, and community through continued collaboration with local emergency management and first-response partners.
