District elementary and middle school students gathered at AMS for a special visit with Katherine Applegate, the Newbery Medal-winning and No. 1 New York Times bestselling author of “The One and Only Ivan,” “The One and Only Bob” and numerous other books for young readers.
WSL previously featured “The One and Only Ivan” and “The One and Only Bob” as part of its One School, One Book read-aloud program. During the visit, students in grades 3-6 had the opportunity to hear directly from Applegate about her books, writing process and experiences as an author.
Students also created and presented Applegate with handmade sculptures and artwork inspired by themes and characters from her books, including “Wishtree” and “The One and Only Ivan.”
Thank you to Northshire Bookstore for helping make both virtual and in-person author visits possible for AP students over the years, beloved District librarians and Mrs. Strano for helping coordinate and support the visit.
Prior to the event, Mrs. Strano attended a Northshire event featuring Applegate and shared reflections with staff about the author’s kindness and connection with readers.
“She is energetic, funny, kind and caring,” Strano shared. “She had a smile the whole time and was so invested in every single person she encountered.”
