Special Education Services

Department Overview

Averill Park Central School District is responsible for providing special education services to all students who qualify for such support. These services are coordinated by the district’s Special Education and Support Services Department, which encompasses the district’s Committees for Special Education at the preschool, elementary and secondary levels. They also oversee the district’s counseling and mental health (social workers, school psychologists, school counselors) services for all students who attend schools within our school district.

As part of its regular K-12 curriculum, the district supports an extensive program for students who have learning difficulties. There is also a comprehensive special education program for disabled students between the ages of 5 and 21.

To the greatest extent possible, Averill Park Central School District believes in educating children with disabilities within a normal school environment. Special programs are available to allow students to receive instruction tailored to their specific and unique needs.

The Special Education Department seeks to provide systematic aid to students with various types of problems – educational, vocational, health, social and personal. The Special Education Department is designed to supplement and complement the instructional and administrative aspects of the educational process, and are an integral part of this process. The Special Education staff consists of counselors, psychologists, nurses, resource teachers, speech therapists, and English as a second language, itinerant, home instruction, and bilingual teachers.

Through developmental, remedial, and preventive measures, pupil personnel staff members work with pupils, parents, and teachers to provide all students the most responsive educational program possible. Services are provided directly to pupils or indirectly through the parents, teachers, principals, or other community agencies.
