New York State students in grades 3-8 take standardized tests in math and English language arts (ELA) in the spring. Fourth- and eighth-graders also take state exams in science. The New York State Education Department has made several changes to the tests, in response to concerns shared by parents and educators. Additional changes are being made to the 2018 tests, including reducing the number of testing days from three to two days.
