Averill Park Students Travel to Japan

This year marked the third EF Tours journey to the Land of the Rising Sun. APHS students traveled to Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka during the ephemeral Hanami (cherry blossom viewing) season. Students toured historically and religiously important shrines and temples, experienced traditional Japanese food and onsen (hot springs), rode the Shinkansen (bullet train), and saw the elusive and revered Mount Fuji.

The group had developed relationships with Kawaguchi-Kita High School last year. The exchange with one another has been critical to the understanding and compassion of the Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami. Through correspondence, the Japanese pen pals let Averill Park students know how the national disaster affected them and their community and our students expressed their compassion and hope for the future. Last year, students raised over $1,000 for the Japan Society so spending the day with their pen pals at the Ueno Park and Zoo gave them a chance to witness some of the recovery in Japan.

Fifth Grade Parents' Night at Algonquin-Tuesday May 29 at 7pm

Algonquin’s Fifth Grade Parents’ Night is Tuesday, May 29 at 7:00pm. This night is one of the key components of the orientation program to Algonquin Middle School.  The evening will give parents/guardians an opportunity to learn about the Algonquin Middle School program.

The program will begin in the auditorium and will include a video about Algonquin and a tour of the building. During the tour, there will be time for parents/guardians to have their questions answered by Algonquin students, faculty and administration.

As your son or daughter will have visited Algonquin before the event, it is not necessary for him/her to attend Parents’ Night.

Averill Park Students Travel to France

This year marks the fourth EF tour Julien Auvray (Paris, France) has led for Averill Park High School French students (2006, 2008, 2010, 2012).  While on tour this April, 16 APHS students visited Paris, Rouen, Etretat, Honfleur, Caen, Arromanches, St. Malo, Mont Saint Michel and Chartres.  Also, the students visited the WWII American cemetery in Colleville-sur-mer, Pointe du Hoc and other sites in the Normandy Invasion Beach area.  Almost 60 APHS students have now benefitted from Julien’s expertise and enthusiasm as a 24/7 tour guide for our trips.

AMS Celebrates Read All Day with a Special Guest: Author James Preller

Read All Day is a celebration of books, literacy and reading.  Guest readers, (including substitute teachers, AP administrators and even a librarian from the Albany Public Library), volunteered their time to read to homerooms and large groups in the auditorium.  Students enjoyed listening to poems, picture books, biographies, magazines, short stories and novels during Read All Day.  Students in the auditorium even heard The Strange Case of Origami Yoda complete with an origami Yoda finger puppet! Click here for more

Poestenkill Elementary School Jumps to Save Hearts

On Friday, March 23, 2012, 148 students stayed after school to participate in the annual Jump Rope For Heart event which is coordinated by Laura Showers, Physical Educator, at the school.  During PE classes, students in grades 3-5 worked on being proficient at a variety of jump rope skills in preparation for the event.  Their determination to help those in our area to fight heart disease and stroke was evident with a donation total of $14,106.00!!  Click here for more

AP School Libraries: They’re Much More Than Books!

Averill Park's school library programs are a critical partner in your child's education. Numerous state studies have found that having a certified full time school librarian helps to improve student's test scores and reading scores. As collaborating partners, school librarians help to design, implement and evaluate lessons that align with the new Common Core Standards. Click here for more

Congressman Gibson Visits APHS

On March 14, Congressman Chris Gibson (R-20th NY) visited with over 100 Advanced Placement Government and History Averill Park students.  The freshman congressman provided an overview of his life in Congress and then entertained student questions during his hour-long visit.  The student-generated questions, both far-ranging and thought-provoking, dealt with both foreign and domestic policy issues as well questions about the inner workings of Congress.

As one student in attendance said, "The Congressman's presentation was a perfect merger of what we learn in class with how the federal government actually operates."

A special thanks goes to Ms. Andrea Gallerie for setting up the visit

Dr. James Hoffman Appointed as Superintendent

On March 27, the Board of Education officially appointed Dr. James Hoffman as the new Superintendent of the Averill Park Central School District.  Dr. Hoffman will begin his new position on July 1, 2012. Welcome Dr. Hoffman!

Community Fund Raising for Athletics

The Averill Park Central School District had to make many difficult decisions in preparing the 2011-2012 school budget.  Reductions were made in staffing, programs and services throughout all district buildings and within each educational level.

The athletic department saw the elimination of all freshman sports, indoor track and several assistant coaches.  These sports and assistant coaching positions can only be considered for reinstatement pending the availability funds, to be raised through community fundraising efforts.
