| Averill Park Students Travel to Japan |
| This year marked the third EF Tours journey to the Land of the Rising Sun. APHS students traveled to Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka during the ephemeral Hanami (cherry blossom viewing) season. Students toured historically and religiously important shrines and temples, experienced traditional Japanese food and onsen (hot springs), rode the Shinkansen (bullet train), and saw the elusive and revered Mount Fuji.
The group had developed relationships with Kawaguchi-Kita High School last year. The exchange with one another has been critical to the understanding and compassion of the Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami. Through correspondence, the Japanese pen pals let Averill Park students know how the national disaster affected them and their community and our students expressed their compassion and hope for the future. Last year, students raised over $1,000 for the Japan Society so spending the day with their pen pals at the Ueno Park and Zoo gave them a chance to witness some of the recovery in Japan.

Algonquin’s Fifth Grade Parents’ Night is Tuesday, May 29 at 7:00pm. This night is one of the key components of the orientation program to Algonquin Middle School. The evening will give parents/guardians an opportunity to learn about the Algonquin Middle School program.
The program will begin in the auditorium and will include a video about Algonquin and a tour of the building. During the tour, there will be time for parents/guardians to have their questions answered by Algonquin students, faculty and administration.
As your son or daughter will have visited Algonquin before the event, it is not necessary for him/her to attend Parents’ Night. |

| Congressman Gibson Visits APHS |
On March 14, Congressman Chris Gibson (R-20th NY) visited with over 100 Advanced Placement Government and History Averill Park students. The freshman congressman provided an overview of his life in Congress and then entertained student questions during his hour-long visit. The student-generated questions, both far-ranging and thought-provoking, dealt with both foreign and domestic policy issues as well questions about the inner workings of Congress.
As one student in attendance said, "The Congressman's presentation was a perfect merger of what we learn in class with how the federal government actually operates."
A special thanks goes to Ms. Andrea Gallerie for setting up the visit |
